What is Lions Festival?

Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity was established in 1954 and brings together the creative communications industry annually to learn, connect and network. The June festival marks the start of the creative year and, as well as bringing together some of the most talented and inventive people in the world, it’s used to outline the year ahead. Each year almost 11,000 registered delegates from 90 different countries enter and attend the 7-day long festivities in a bid to earn the most well-respected award in the advertising industry.

The mission of Cannes Lions is to celebrate the powerful force that is creativity in businesses and the change it can bring to the world. Through a global network of official Lions representatives and a series of awards, events and training, the aim of inspiring and challenging the industry is ongoing.

In the 1990’s the festival added a programme of learning in the form of seminars and workshops. The festival has since grown immensely with 2013 featuring nearly 130 different seminars over the 7-day event. Famous and well-known names come to speak and share words of wisdom from all over the industry and include musician, Jack Black, F1 driver Jenson Button, photographer Annie Leibovitz and founder of the Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington.

How are the awards given?

Each jury in the Cannes Lions Festival is made up of industry experts in each field from all over the world. Jurors are instructed to reward advertising that is both creative in its idea and in its execution and advertisements are usually entered by the agencies that created them.

The categories awarded include Film, Media, Press, Radio, Mobile, PR  and Creative Effectiveness among a whole range of others. The festival launched a brand new category in 2013 for innovative technology that facilitates creativity and named it ‘Innovation Lions’. Global start ups can now also apply for the Start Up Academy in order to receive festival passes and mentorship sessions that will come in handy for the future.

The Young Lions competitions are open to advertising professionals up to the age of 28 years old to work in teams of 2 across a series of categories including print, PR, design and young marketers. Regional competitions are held in each country to select teams to go forward. The winners of those rounds then go on to the final round of competitions at the Cannes Lions Festival.

Specialist Events

Cannes Lions offers 3 specialist events to help those working in specific sectors to work on their skills and knowledge they need to move forward in the industry.

9 Reasons Why You Need to Visit France

Stuck on ideas for your next holiday? Always thought of visiting the beautiful country of France but still not quite sure why it’s so popular? Read on to find out our

9 Reasons Why You Need to Visit France

It’s The Most Visited Country by International Tourists

In 2016, there were 1.235 billion tourists travelling around the world and France’s arrivals accounted for 82.6 million of them, beating the United States, Germany, Thailand and the UK for international tourist visitors. Germans are the biggest visitors with over 13 million followed by Belgium and Italy. The Brits love it too with 12.5 millon jetting over to see what all the fuss is about.

French Riviera

It’s Easy to Get To

France shares its borders with 8 different nations so it’s easy to country-hop and make the most of your holiday, even if you only stay for the day! It’s quick and simple to arrive from the UK via the Eurostar and the Eurotunnel as well as a fleet of ferries or multiple airlines.

Eurostar

The Gorgeous Weather

One of the most favourable and famous aspects of any French holiday is their amazing weather, particularly along the Cote d’Azur. With bright blue skies, sparkling sea, hot summers and mild autumns, it’s no surprise that people flock to the country to enjoy the climate France has; even the locals head south for the summer!

The History & Heritage

The French have a fantastic reputation for looking after their heritage and promoting their history with pride. They have a talent for keeping historical sites immaculate and interesting; making them just as relevant and exciting in the present as they were in their heyday. With war sites, historical colourful towns, chataeux’s and castles – You will find a rich and fascinating piece of history wherever you go.

The Incredible Food

It’s not all ‘escargot’, smelly cheese and baguettes (although we’d never turn down a freshly baked baguette from the boulangerie!). There’s an endless variety of tasty food and indulgent dishes to try. Whether you prefer a family run restaurant tucked away from the hustle and bustle or a Michelin star soiree with the finest food imaginable, you will never go hungry – France is famous for its culinary delights.

Fine Wine

Ever heard of a wonderful thing called champagne? How about Claret or Burgandy wine? These are all names of regions as well as marvellous types of wines that originate from France. There are 27,000 wineries in France and around 110,000 wine growers so there’s always an opportunity to taste test for yourself!

It’s The Perfect Pit Stop on a European Road Trip

If you’re not one of those thousands of people flying into France for their holidays, then you can always join the rest who pass through the country for a mini break. It’s well worth extending your holiday by spending a few nights along the French Riviera before heading off to any one of France’s neighbours like Italy or Spain.

The Landmarks

When someone says France, most people immediately think of the Eiffel Tower and rightly so! The immensely beautiful tower is the icon of France and remains one of the most popular landmarks to tick off any keen traveller’s list of ‘Things to See’. However, France includes many more thrilling landmarks to capture. The city of Paris is one in itself but along with the tower, you should definitely visit the Arc de Triomph as well as the Louvre Museum. Don’t forget the Lavender fields in Provence, the iconic Pampelonne Beach in St Tropez and of course, Mont Blanc.

The Mountains Are Calling!

With its varied and stunning mountain ranges, France is one of the world’s biggest and most popular destinations for skiers and snow sport fanatics. Whether you’re looking for an exhilarating winter full of skiing, a cosy Christmas where the snow is deep and white or even a summer of hiking and climbing activities; the French Alps offers beautiful resorts for you to explore and enjoy.

Reasons You’ll Instantly Fall in Love with the French Riviera

If you’ve never been to the French Riviera before, you’ve definitely heard of it!
With the famous Lions & Film Festivals giving it a celebrity status, it’s no wonder it’s such a desired location to visit. It’s certainly our favourite. But why?

Arrival

As you descend, you can see that stunning coastline, the Mediterranean Sea and the snow-capped mountains of the French Alps through the windows of the plane and it’s clear you’re arriving in a place of true natural beauty.

View from the plane!

Driving to our destination of Cap d’Antibes is a pleasant journey along the A8 and took just over half an hour.

Cap d’Antibes

Being one of the most sought after addresses along the Riviera, the charm of Cap d’Antibes is evident from the offset with quaint cobbled streets and beautiful scenery. Once we’d dropped off our luggage at the villa, we went for a stroll!

Selfie in Antibes

The old town is gorgeous with pretty houses, designer shops and a wonderful market filled with a vast variety of produce ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, meats, cheeses and spices. We didn’t have a lot of time as our schedule was jam-packed however our wander through the market allowed us to be very enticed by the arrays of colour!

Cannes

We continued to walk into Cannes, where our first stop was one of our favourite chocolatiers – Juan Luc Pele. The display is so inviting that you can’t help but be drawn in by it. The smell of the sweet chocolate has your tastebuds doing somersaults from the moment you walk in the door and there’s an entire wall made of chocolate! Our treats of choice were the macarons – so delicious! Whatever you may purchase here, you won’t be disappointed.

After a long walk, it was time for a well-deserved drink! We stopped off at 72 Croisette for a refreshing gin & tonic. It’s in a great location opposite the beach with a wonderful sea view and it turned out to be a prime spot for the sunset.

Saint Jean Cap Ferrat

It was a fly by visit to Saint Jean Cap Ferrat but this is such a quaint town, nestled in greenery on the peninsula between Nice and Monaco. It’s one of the most popular locations on the Cote d’Azur with exclusive homes and a large yacht harbour. The village itself is quite small but there are plenty of terrace cafes and restaurants along the port.

One of the regions most popular attractions is the Ephrussi de Rothschild. This incredible building is a museum with magnificent gardens and grounds – it’s definitely worth spending a couple of hours here to appreciate the craftsmanship of the landscapes.

Villa Rothschild

The beaches in Cap Ferrat are an ideal place for relaxation and topping up your tan. The panoramic views spread from the bay of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Villefranche harbour and all the way over to the cliffs of Eze.

Paloma Beach - St Jean Cap Ferrat

Monaco

Monaco is most famous for the Grand Prix as well as the legendary Monte-Carlo Casino. It’s a haven for the wealthy and a playground for tourists. It’s the second smallest city in the world (the smallest being Vatican City) but that doesn’t mean it’s any less exhilarating and should be on your list of places to visit.

Monaco Harbour

It was quite peaceful on the day we visited even though there were numerous groups of people on their own travels. All the buildings were pristine and uniquely designed, adding to the character of Monaco. The palace is protected by guards and chains but you are still able to get a perfect, obscured view.

Monaco Cathedral is particularly striking, there is no entrance fee and photographs are prohibited inside the building. It’s truly stunning and tranquil with amazing detail and architecture.

Monaco Cathedral

Eze

A beautiful medieval village situated in the hills with absolutely breath taking views of the coast. In my opinion, it’s my favourite location and a must-see! The village is pedestrianized so a car park is located below it along side the tourism office. There are a maze of paved streets to explore with picturesque buildings to be photographed and viewed with awe.

Eze Village

The French Riviera is an utterly remarkable place to visit and we can’t get enough!

La Reserve Hotel Spa & Villas – Ramatuelle, St Tropez

One of our fabulous South of France consultant, Rebekah, was invited to stay at the truly incredible La Reserve Hotel Spa and Villas in Ramatuelle, St Tropez.

We couldn’t wait to hear more about her trip in the sunshine!

“There is no better feeling than walking through Nice airport on a sunny Friday afternoon to be greeted by your very own private chauffeur. After collecting my bags and escorting me to a luxurious Mercedes-Benz, my weekend had officially begun and off to Ramatuelle I went!”

“After what seemed like a quick 1 hour and 30 minute transfer, I arrived at the La Reserve Ramatuelle. I was guided into the main reception area of the hotel with a glass of champagne, soaking in the uninterrupted views of the sea whilst my bags were taken directly to the private villa.”
You can see right from the entrance through to the sea
Champagne arrival!
“Arriving at the villa via the in-resort golf buggies, I was greeted by the private butler, Anne. Anne showed me around the stunning villa and helped settle me in.”

Our fantastic private villa!
That view!

“Once ready for dinner, we headed into the charming village of Ramatuelle via the in resort chauffeur service.
La Forge – the setting for the evening! A gorgeous Italian restaurant in the heart of the old village. Our chef came to our table and personally introduced himself before explaining the delicious set menu we were soon to experience.”

“Full to the brim, we were picked up and taken back to the villa to find the turn down service you would expect to receive from any 5* hotel.”

“An idyllic start to the day with a mouth watering continental breakfast served at the hotel before heading back to the villa to enjoy the sunshine and, of course, the swimming pool!”

“Lunch was served by Anne and her ultra professional team and once again, the food was immaculate.”

“Our group headed into St Tropez, again by the in resort chauffeurs. The sun was beaming and the town and port were picture-perfect. We strolled around the port, browsing the boutiques and shops until it was time for something refreshing to sip.”
Lots of markets and boutiques to search through! You could spend all day here..
The beautiful super yachts are a sight to behold

“Club 55 – the perfect place for a glass of Rose!”
Rose on the beach – paradise!

“Time to head back to the villa for our 5pm slot in the spa. We were collected and dropped off and what followed was a heavenly 50 minute deep tissue massage – I would highly recommend to anyone! This spa was possibly the best spa inside a hotel I’ve ever seen.”

“Afterwards, dinner was served at the La Voile; the Michelin star restaurant in the hotel for another divine evening of fine cuisine, wine and good company.”

“The next morning arrived and poolside Pilates was on the agenda! Our wonderful instructor, Benjamin, really put us through our paces.”

“A well-earned brunch was served at the villa before our weekend drew to a close and we headed back to Nice airport for our return to the UK.”

“All in all, a fantastic weekend spent at La Reserve Ramatuelle where you can experience the hotel, spa and restaurant from the security of a private villa. A highly recommended choice for anyone looking for 5* service.”

Top 5 French Dishes You Need To Try!

When people talk of French food and restaurants, they are normally referring to the fine food and wine, sophistication and the excellent quality.
Not something simply from the supermarket, traditional and contemporary French dishes are chosen with exceptional knowledge and interest in the ingredients themselves from the quality to the origins.

Here are our Favourite Traditional French Dishes You Should Try

Bouilabaisse

A stew flavoured with saffron, this beautifully warming dish is originally from the French Provencal region. Filled with a variety of shellfish and vegetables, it also includes at least four different types of fish; normally conger, scorpion fish and monkfish. Served with crusty French bread topped with rouille, a mayonnaise made with olive oil, saffron, garlic and cayenne.

Piperade

A speciality in the South of France and Basque areas, Piperade takes advantage of the excess of rich tomatoes and colourful peppers in the area. Again served with crusty bread, baking eggs into the dish makes this meal super tasty.

Coq au Vin

One of the most famous French dishes, Coq au Vin varies slightly from each region like most French meals. Originally made with rooster but now more commonly with chicken, this dish is warming and hearty. The wine sauce again varies between different regions with regards to preparation but Burgandy is the widely used choice.

Escargot

Most people find themselves turning their nose up at the very thought of eating snails but this dish is an incredibly famous and popular delicacy. Served as an appetiser, the snails are removed from their shells, cleaned and placed back in after being prepared with a garlic butter sauce. The dish even comes with its own utensil; a handy pair of tongs used to hold the shell.

Crepes

To end on a sweet note, crepes are a very traditional dessert eaten all over France. Very popular and normally eaten sweet, cafes and shops on every corner will be highly likely to serve crepes to their hungry customers.

The Best of the Cote d’Azur: Saint Tropez

The French Riviera is one of the most desirable and luxurious destinations for travel in the world.

Here at Elegant Address, we’re excited to be able to offer the very best in elite villa and apartment rentals in these world-class locations.

Of course, there is more to the place than just the sparkling sea and glorious sunshine, although that is a big deal breaker…

St Tropez is one of the very best!

A Brief History

St Tropez is synonymous with espadrilles, bronzed tans and the 60’s French star, Brigette Bardot.
Outside of the fashion and pop culture we’re all aware of today, there is so much more to know about this coastal town on the French Riviera.

It begins with the grisly legend of Saint Torpes of Pisa. Torpes was a Roman soldier in the service of the Emperor Nero also working as his bodyguard. After refusing to denounce his Christian faith, Torpes was killed and his body was left to drift out to sea in a boat with a dog and a rooster.
The legend says his body washed ashore in modern day Saint-Tropez with the bird and the dog who left his body untouched.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Saint-Tropez became attacked and ravaged by pirates and bandits. Lasting a century or so, the neighbouring village of Garde Frient was established and the surrounding areas, along with St Tropez became an Arabic-Muslim colony for another 100 years.

Brigette Bardot

More recent history shows St Tropez was one of the landing sites for the Allied assault on Southern France in August 1944.
But it was the 1960’s that really saw Saint-Tropez come out of its shell and acquire its world-renowned status. Brigette Bardot not only launched her own career but also the town in the 1956 film, ‘And God Created Woman’. Both her characters’ sexuality and her own persona tied St Tropez together and it became the meeting place for the new young, pretty things of the time.

Since then, Saint-Tropez has been linked to some of the world’s biggest stars with supermodels being particularly highly spotted, including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford. Penelope Cruz and the Hiltons are also spotted regularly on the harbour or the beach.

Sightseeing Opportunities

Saint-Tropez really does have some fascinating things to see and to do. Make sure you give yourself time between relaxing and unwinding by taking in some of these wonderful sights.

Pampelonne Beach

This massively long stretch of beautiful sand is Saint-Tropez’s main beach. It’s busy in the summer time but if you manage to stay long enough (not a hard task as it’s truly amazing), the sunsets are unforgettable.

La Citadelle de Saint-Tropez

This sixteenth-century fortress is perhaps Saint-Tropez’s most famous buildings and also boasts one of the town’s best views.

La Maison des Papillons

A quirky little museum dedicated to butterflies, it’s definitely worth a visit even if it’s not the first thing to think of. The museum was created by Dany Lartigue, son of famous photographer, Jacques-Henri Lartigue.

Musee de l’Acconciade

One of the region’s most incredible museums including works from Matisse, Rodin, Kee, Signac and more. The perfect respite from the bustle of the main town.

Our Recommended Events in Saint-Tropez

Being the centre of glitz and glamour means that St Tropez is the host of some exciting and unique events.

Fetes des Mimosas

The Route des Mimosas is a 130km route along the coast, following the towns made famous by the Belle Epoque period. The beloved mimosa flower was actually introduced by the British in the 1800’s to add sunnier colours to their gardens during the late winter holidays.
During this roadtrip, there’s a definite spring time feel and the area was the first to really introduce the al fresco lunch bistros along the mimosa-lined village streets. The landscape today is sunshine yellow, signalling the start of the season.

Harley Davidson Euro Festival

Port Grimaud is the go to scene for the fantastic motorcycle displays along the beachfront. The roads around the entire region are rumbling when these gleaming machines cruise in the sun.

Les Voiles Latines Regatta

This colourful fleet of wooden fishing boats arrive in the port, replacing the luxury yachts for the weekend.

Les Voiles de St Tropez Sailing Regatta

The biggest event in Saint-Tropez’s year, the last week of September sees hundreds of incredible yachts sail into the harbour to race in one of the biggest regattas in the global yachting calendar.

La Braderie Designer Fashion Sales

The streets of Saint-Tropez are lined with rows of heavily discounted designer goods, making this not any ordinary flea market. Give yourself plenty of time to browse through the many racks of fashions and accessories from the biggest names in fashion including Gucci, Prada and Chanel.

Christmas & New Year

There’s a huge calendar of events in St Tropez during the festive period, ranging from ice hockey games, petting zoos and festive films shown at the cinema. Don’t forget to see Pere Noel (Santa Claus) arrive by boat in the old port on Christmas Eve and enjoy the fireworks set the sky alight on New Year’s Eve.

Best Time to Visit

If you’re looking to be in the throng of the glitz and glamour that Saint-Tropez brings, July and August are the best times to visit. The restaurants are humming, the streets are brimming and bards and clubs gather everyone gorgeous. Everyone is here from billionaires to movie stars and it’s definitely the place to see the celebrities.

However, Saint-Tropez is beautiful all year round with plenty of sight seeing opportunities and unforgettable experiences.
